Superintendent Addresses Community Role In Teacher Compensation Plan Friday, April 16
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2004
Denver Public Schools Superintendent Jerry Wartgow will discuss the revolutionary new "ProComp" system for teacher pay at a bi-monthly Teacher Compensation Community Forum beginning at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, April 16 at the CEC Middle College of Denver, 2650 Eliot St. in Denver. The superintendent will discuss the "Community’s Role in Revolutionizing Teacher Compensation."
The Denver Board of Education approved the new Professional Compensation Plan for Teachers in February and the Denver Classroom Teachers Association announced the ratification of the plan March 19.
The new compensation plan supports the district’s goals of setting high expectations for teachers and improving the performance of all students. Under ProComp, teachers will earn pay for increasing student achievement, improving their knowledge and skills, earning satisfactory professional evaluations and serving in difficult-to-staff positions and academically-challenged schools.
The ProComp system has drawn national attention from educators and the media. Among the topics Wartgow will address will be the next steps for ProComp. In order for this landmark new pay system to take effect, Denver voters must approve a $25 million mill levy in November 2005. With a positive vote, ProComp would go into effect in January 2006.
The Community Forum is open to the public. Anyone who would like to attend should contact Becky Martinez at 303-221-1421.
