Joint Task Force on Teacher Compensation Unveils Draft Proposal
Beginning the week of April 14, DPS and DCTA will unveil the first draft of a new comprehensive compensation system that ties teacher compensation more closely to the district's mission of improving student learning.
Under the proposal, every teacher will be challenged to meet rigorous, high expectations in a system that is built on fairness. At the same time, teachers in the new system will have multiple opportunities and avenues to significantly increase their career earnings and manage their career paths.
The draft proposal is the product of the Joint Task Force on Teacher Compensation, which has been working on this project for nearly two years.
The Task Force has recommended bold changes in the way teachers are paid. It also recognizes that change of this magnitude must be implemented gradually as the district builds the capacity to support it. Both DPS and DCTA have committed to help raise the money necessary to pay for additional costs associated with the system.
The rollout calendar outlines key dates when the proposal will be communicated to teachers and others in the district. Release of these draft recommendations begins a discussion of fundamental importance to Denver’s teachers, the Board of Education and the community.
The leadership of Denver Public Schools and Denver Classroom Teachers Association want to make sure everyone is well informed and has an opportunity to make comments and suggestions. Both DPS and DCTA seek this dialogue in an effort to become learning organizations.
